How did J.K. Rowling cope with fame?

JK Rowling has revealed that she felt ‘under siege’ in her own home and had to ‘cover her children in blankets’ to hide them from photographers and journalists, who constantly hounded her after the success of ‘Harry Potter’ books.

The 46-year-old author told the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics that she had to fight a fierce battle to protect her children from the consequences of her fame.

Rowling also said that the paparazzi unceasingly targeted her family and one incident that left her really infuriated was when one of the journalists slipped a letter into her five-year-old daughter’s schoolbag.

“I unzipped her schoolbag in the evening, and among the usual letters from school and the debris that every child generates, I found an envelope and a letter addressed to me from a journalist,” the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

“I can only say that I felt such a sense of invasion. It is very difficult to say how angry I felt that my five-year-old daughter’s school was no longer a place of complete security from journalists.”

The multi-millionaire and her family were driven out of their home and could not take any family holidays due to the constant presence of photographers.

Since she did not want her family to live under an “invisibility cloak”, like the one used by ‘Harry Potter’ in her novels, Rowling asserted that she had made numerous complaints about covert photographs of her and her children.
